EDITOR'S NOTE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is the last issue of the eighth year of publication of the Loop Scoop. With the articles in this issue, I have finished most of the first draft of "The Early Loop Family in America". As a bonus to current subscribers, I will send out one more issue which will contain articles on miscellaneous branches of the family that have not yet been connected to Anthony LUPP of Hesse-Nassau. After that, the Loop Scoop will cease to be a quarterly publication. I will, however, continue sending out a short newsletter about once a year, free of charge to anyone interested, containing information on my progress in completing and publishing "The Early Loop Family in America". Anyone who has paid money for next year's subscription will be offered the option of a refund or a credit toward the eventual purchase price of the book. I'm sure that some of you will be disappointed to see the end of the quarterly newsletter. But I need the time to devote to finishing the book, and very little new information has been coming in during the last year or two. I feel that my time will be better spent in finishing the book than in trying to put together a newsletter four times a year. It has been quite a pleasurable, though demanding, experience publishing the Loop Scoop. Without the help of all of you out there, we could never have put together such a complete picture of the family history. I am proud of the major contributions that I feel I have made, but it has been very much a team effort. Thanks so much for your help and encouragement over the better part of a decade. (c) Victor L. Bennison, 1992 ****************************** ARTICLE ********************************* The Family of Christian Lupp of Hillsdale, New York Victor L. Bennison [A draft of a chapter from "The Early Loop Family in America", in preparation, (c) 1992] Christian LOOP [Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] the first child of Jacob LUPP and Anna Elizabeth ROSS, was born in Langenbach, Hesse-Nassau, Germany, in 1695. He married Anna Maria FILGER before December, 1728. There were several Filger families living in the Bad Marienberg parish at the time. No marriage has been found for Christian and Anna Maria even though the parish marriage records for that period are complete. We know, however, that his father Jacob went to East Prussia sometime near 1725 with nine members of his family and returned before 1728. There was also a Heinrich FILGER from Marienberg aged about 50 in 1725 who went to East Prussia at the same time with four members of his family. His daughters included a Catherine Maria FILGER and a Catherine FILGER, but no Anna Maria FILGER. As far as we have been able to assertain, Christian LUPP, one of the four immigrant sons of Jacob LUPP of Langenbach, was the first Loop to set foot in North America. Though we have no ship record of his arrival, we can pinpoint his date of arrival to within a few months. His son John was christened in Langenbach, Germany, on May 1, 1737, and his wife is listed as one of those present on October 16, 1737 at the christening, in New York City, of a child born at sea. So Christian Lupp and his family arrived in New York City sometime between May and October of 1737, probably nearer to October. Also witnessing the christening was Elizabeth (LOOP) COOPER, who was the wife of Martin COOPER and was probably Christian's sister Elizabeth born in 1717. These people do not appear again in the New York Lutheran Church records, so it is likely they had only just arrived and only stopped long enough to christen the child born at sea, before moving on up the Hudson River to the settlements. Christian LUPP and Anna Maria FILGER had at least seven children, about half of them born in Germany, and the rest in New York. Their last child we know about was born in 1747. On December 13, 1747 Christian LOOP is listed in the Livingston Papers as a debtor of Germantown, NY. We have no record of the couple after that date. No death records have been found yet for either Christian LUPP or his wife. It is generally assumed that they both died in Columbia County, New York. The children of Christian LUPP and Anna Maria FILGER were: + 1. Catherine LOOP, b. 1728, in Langenbach, Hesse-Nassau, Germany, m. Barent DENNY. + 2. Johan Peter LOOP, b. December 12, 1732, in Langenbach, Hesse-Nassau, Germany, m. (1) Cousia SPRINGER, m. (2) Maria BAILEY, m. (3) Prudence MOREHOUSE. He d. October 20, 1824, and is buried in North Hillsdale, Columbia County, NY. 3. Elizabeth Maria LOOP, b. September 22, 1734, in Langenbach, Hesse-Nassau, Germany, m. Gershorn DARLY. Their child Mary DARLY, was born in 1760 at Claverack, Columbia County, NY. + 4. John LOOP, b. May 1, 1737, in Langenbach, Hesse-Nassau, Germany, m. Ruth. + 5. Hendrick LOOP, b. about 1740, in Fishkill, Dutchess County, NY, m. Nellie SHARP. + 6. Martin LOOP, b. December 8, 1741, in Germantown, Columbia County, NY. + 7. Jannetje (Jane) LOOP, b. November 4, 1744, in Kinderhook, Columbia County, NY, m. Jacob HOAGTELING. 8. Eva LOOP, b. May 11, 1747, in Loonenburg, Greene County, NY, m. George KILMER. They had at least one child, John KILMER, christened in Linlithgo, New York, in 1781. Catherine LOOP [Christian(4), [Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] the first child of Christian LOOP and Anna Maria FILGER was born December 23, 1728, in Langenbach, Hesse-Nassau, Germany. A sponsor at Catherine LOOP's christening was Peter FILGER's wife Catherine. It is tempting to think that this Peter and Catherine are Anna Maria FILGER's parents. This Peter and Catherine FILGER did have a daughter Anna Maria. But she married a man named GREB, and we have no record that he died in Bad Marienberg or went to East Prussia with the others. Also, it was not customary in the Bad Marienberg parish for grandparents to serve as godparents. It was very common, however, for a child's uncle or aunt to serve as a godparent. Probably, therefore, this Peter FILGER was Anna Maria LUPP's brother or possibly her uncle. It is most likely that Catherine LOOP, the daughter of Christian LOOP, is the Catherine LOOP who married Barent DENNY of Claverack, NY. Their daughter Jannetje (Janet or Jane) DENNY was named after her godmother Jannetje LOOP, who was probably the 17 year old daughter of Christian and Maria making her Catherine's sister and the child's aunt. Barent DENNY died in 1803. We do not know when Catherine (LOOP) DENNY died. The children of Barent DENNY and Catherine LOOP were: 1. Nicholas DENNY, christened November 13, 1745, at Zion Lutheran church, Athens, Greene County, NY, m. Anna M., surname unknown. He d. June 1, 1845, in Mayfield, Montgomery County, NY. 2. Mary DENNY, b. about 1748, d. before 1769. 3. Anna (or Hannah) DENNY, christened September 17, 1749, at Claverack Reformed Church, Columbia County, NY. 4. Jacob DENNY, christened December, 1750, m. (1) name unknown, m. (2) May 17, 1788, Dorothy, a widow of Michael STROLLER. She d. September 15, 1823. 5. Israel DENNY, m. Elizabeth ROW. 6. Daniel DENNY, b. May 26, 1755, d. 11 JUN 1806, in Mayfield, Montgomery County, NY. 7. Catherine DENNY, christened December 26, 1756, at Claverack Reformed Church, Columbia County, NY. 8. Annatje DENNY, christened June 17, 1759, at Claverack Reformed Church, Columbia County, NY. 9. Jannetje DENNY, christened May 10, 1761, at Claverack Reformed Church, Columbia County, NY. 10. Eva Lis (i.e. Elizabeth) DENNY, christened May 26, 1764, at Claverack Reformed Church, Columbia County, NY. 11. Henry DENNY, m. Dolly MARSH. He d. before September, 1812. Johann Peter LOOP [Christian(4), [Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] and his descendants are covered in a separate chapter. [See Loop Scoop, October, 1991]. John LOOP [Christian(4), [Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] the fourth child of Christian LOOP and Anna Maria FILGER, and the last of their children born in Germany, was born in Langenbach, Hesse-Nassau, May 1, 1737. John LOOP married a woman named Ruth, whose surname is as yet undetermined. They had four children baptized in Linlithgo, Columbia County, New York. The whole family then disappears. It is possible that the family moved to Canada, as their first child's name was Joseph, and the name Joseph appears in at least two of the Canadian lines. The children of John LOOP and his wife Ruth were: 1. Joseph LOOP, b. June 1, 1763, in Churchtown, Columbia County, NY. 2. Henrich LOOP, christened June 16, 1777, in Hillsdale, Columbia County, NY, possibly the Henry LOOP who married Patty ADRIANCE on December 5, 1798, at the Greenbush Reformed Dutch Church, in East Greenbush, Rensselaer County, NY. 3. Catherina LOOP, christened April 2, 1780, at Hillsdale, Columbia County, NY. 4. Sarah LOOP, christened September 22, 1782, at Hillsdale, Columbia County, NY. Hendrick LOOP [Christian(4), [Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] the fifth child of Christian LOOP and Anna Maria FILGER and the first of their children born in America, was born in 1740 in Fishkill, Dutchess County, New York. He later became known as Ensign Hendrick LOOP. There is no hard evidence that Ensign Hendrick was their son, but there is much convincing circumstantial evidence to that effect. (1) There is no evidence that there was any other LOOP family in the country in 1740. (2) Among his children's names were: Martin, Peter, John, Maria, and Catherine, all names of his aunts and uncles assuming he is Christian's child. His other children were named: Henry, Nelly, Andrew, Joanna, Elizabeth, and Rachel. They were named for himself, his wife, his wife's father, mother, and two sisters. (3) He served in Hogeboom's Company of Militia around 1760 the same company that in 1767 saw a Peter LOOP and John LOOP as enlistees, almost certainly Christian LOOP's sons Peter and John. (4) Sponsors at the baptism of one of his children are Jacob HOAGTELING and his wife Jannetje LOOP, Christian LUPP's daughter. (5) Capt. Peter LOOP, Mary (lOOP) KILMER, Catherine (LOOP) Denny, and Hendrick's wife's parents were all attending the same church at Claverack, NY, at about the time that Hendrick married. According to the Hogeboom's Company muster record, Hendrick was born in Fishkill. The parish registers for Fishkill for around that date list no LOOP's. Soon after his marriage to Eleanor (Nelly) SHARP (or SCHERP) around 1762, he moved his family north along the Hudson River, eventually settling in Schagticoke. His sister Jannetje (LOOP) HOAGTELING came along with her family. It is not known where when he or his wife died. The children of Ensign Hendrick LOOP and Nelly SHARP were: + 1. Martin LOOP, christened June 4, 1763, in Albany, Albany County, NY, m. September 29, 1782, Mary HULL. He d. near 1820, probably in Oneida County, NY. [See Loop Scoop, January, 1990.] + 2. Andrew LOOP, b. June 3, 1765, in Schaghticoke, Rensselaer County, NY, and christened there June 15, 1765. He m. (1) about 1786, Susannah BEECH, m. (2) Anne HOOKER, who was born about 1781. He d. about 1856 in Clay, Onondaga County, NY. [See Loop Scoop, July, 1991.] + 3. Peter H. LOOP, b. August 7, 1767, in Schaghticoke, Rensselaer County, NY, and christened there October 21, 1767, m. about 1790, Rebecca GILBERT. She d. about 1840. He d. June 9, 1855, and is buried in Woodville, Sandusky County, OH. [See Loop Scoop, October, 1990.] 4. Joanna LOOP, b. November 28, 1770, in Schaghticoke, Rensselaer County, NY, and christened there January 29, 1771, m. (1) Jacob FRIDAY, m. (2) Solomon JONES. + 5. John LOOP, b. February 27, 1771, in Schaghticoke, Rensselaer County, NY, and christened there August 26, 1771, m. (1) by 1793, Mary (Polly) EGGLESTON, m. (2) Avis FISHER. He d. October 1, 1862, in Freetown, Cortland County, NY. [See Loop Scoop, July, 1991.] 6. Maria (Polly) LOOP, b. September 22, 1775, in Schaghticoke, Rensselaer County, NY, m. June 30, 1794, John L. MILLER. 7. Elizabeth (Betsy) LOOP, b. April 2, 1778, in Schaghticoke, Rensselear County, NY, m. about 1797, Peter SHAFT. + 8. Henry LOOP (a twin), b. August 9, 1780, in Schaghticoke, Rensselaer County, NY. He may have died young, or he may be the Henry LOOP who became known as "Vermont" Henry LOOP. [See Loop Scoop, July, 1989.] 9. Rachel LOOP (a twin), b. August 9, 1780, in Schaghticoke, Rensselaer County, NY. She may have died young. 10. Eleanor (Nelly) LOOP, b. February 14, 1784, in Schaghticoke, Rensselaer County, NY, and christened there February 16, 1784, m. about 1803, Rev. William CAMERON. She d. about 1876. 11. Catherine LOOP, b. April 22, 1785, in Schaghticoke, Rensselaer County, NY, and christened August 20, 1786, m. Lewis CAMERON. Martin LOOP [Christian(4), [Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] the sixth child of Christian LOOP and Maria FILGER was christened December 8, 1741 in Germantown, Columbia County, New York. We know nothing further about this child. There is a Martin Lupe listed as "alone and sickly" and unfit for military duty in Livingston Manor in 1776. Christian's brother Martin was married with a large family at that time. Capt. Peter's son Martin was only ten years old. And we don't know of any other Martin Loop around at that time. So it is possible that this is Christian's son Martin. There is no evidence that he left a family. Jannetje LOOP [Christian(4), [Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] the seventh child of Christian LOOP and Anna Maria FILGER was Jannetje Loop, was christened November 4, 1744, in Kinderhook, Columbia County, New York. She married Jacob HOAGTELING, probably the Jacob, son of Jan and Jannetje HOAGTELING, born in 1740 in Linlithgo, Columbia County, New York. After her marriage, she and her husband settled near her brother Hendrick in Schagticoke, Rensselaer County, New York. We know of four children: twins Hendrick and Jacob Hoagteling, born in 1771, David Hoagteling, born in 1776, and Adam Hoagteling, born in 1779. All were christened in Schagticoke, Rensselaer County, NY. ****************************** ARTICLE ********************************* The Family of Anthony Lupp of Pennsylvania Victor L. Bennison [A draft of a chapter from "The Early Loop Family in America", in preparation, (c) 1992] Anthony LUPP [Johann Christian(4), Henrich(3), August(2), Anthony(1)], the first child of Johann Christian LUPP and Anna Maria SCHORN, was born February 6, 1733, in Hof, Hesse-Nassau, Germany, and was christened (as Johann Tonges LUPP) February 18, 1733, in the Bad Marienberg parish church. He married his first wife Anna Catherina DENCKER on October 22, 1758. She was born about 1734, the daughter of Johann Christian DENCKER. Their first three children were born in Hof. They arrived in Philadelphia on the ship Polly about October 18, 1766. He was a schoolmaster. They served as sponsors for a child of Samuel Muse in 1775 at the Jordan Reformed Church in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. She was buried in Lehigh County July 29, 1778. Anthony LUPP married his second wife, Susannah, widow of Rudolph PETER of Heidelberg Township, Lehigh County, on December 8, 1778. In the 1790 Federal Census of York County, Anthony Loop is listed as the head of a household containing two males over sixteen and two females. They are in part of York County that later became part of Adams county. This is probably Anthony Sr. and Anthony Jr. living in the same house. There is a Jacob LUPP in neighboring Dauphin County which is probably his son Jacob. In the 1800 census of Adams County there are two Anthony LUPP households and a Jacob LUPP household. Anthony Lupp died near March 6, 1805, the date of the administrative bond for his estate. In that bond, Jacob LUPP is listed as executor. It is possible that Anthony LUPP married a third time, for there is an undated note titled "Widow declines" among his estate papers, written in German which reads something like: The [?] is too damaged(?) for me and too much [?] I don't have no concern with it that's what I have to say anna maria [her mark?] lupp Michel Wehr Michael WEHR was Anthony's son-in-law and probably is serving here as a witness. At the time of his death, Anthony LUPP lived in Mount Pleasant Township in Adams County, just east of Gettysburg. The inventory of Anthony LUPP's estate is lengthy, but very interesting and is therefore reproduced here in it's entirety. Notice that he owned 21 books, quite a large library for the time, but not unusual perhaps for a schoolmaster. Anthony LUPP [Anthony(5), Johann Christian(4), Henrich(3), August(2), Anthony(1)], the third child of Anthony LUPP and Anna Catherina DENCKER, was born in Hof, Hesse-Nassau, Germany, and was christened April 8, 1765, in the parish church at Bad Marienberg. He married, between May, 1793, and April, 1794, Esther KECKLER. She was born about 1769 or 1770. Anthony LUPP was a carpenter by trade, and apparently never owned any land. He lived in Menallen Township, probably from as early as 1790, until 1818 when he moved to Tyrone Township. He paid taxes in the respective townships from 1803 to 1819 on two cows and his carpenters tools. Nine of his children, all that we have found, were christened in the Arendtsville Lutheran and Reformed Union Church from 1794 to 1816. Anthony Lupp died before June 12, 1824, the date of the Administrative Bond for his estate. The inventory of his estate, dated in Adams County July 12, 1824, as transcribed by Robert Lupp and with my tentative translations, lists: 1 teen Plot Stoff an pipe [tin pot stove and pipe] $2.50 1 Bad & Badstad [bed and bedstead] 8.00 1 Chart [cart or chest?] 1.00 4 Chares [chairs] 1.00 1 Box 1 Banch [box and bench] .25 1 Bade and Badstave [bed and bedstead] 5.00 1 (item crossed out) 2 Paots 1 Cront tafe [pots and ?] 1.50 1 tavel [table?] 2.00 Anthony's wife Esther Lupp died June 13, 1849, aged about 80 in Menallen Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. She had a child out of wedlock in 1824: James LUPP, whose father was James DONLE. She may have been the Mary LUPP living alone in Berwich Township, Adams County, PA, in 1830. 7. Johan George LUPP, b. November 16, 1805, and christened in Arendtsville, Adams County, PA, January 5, 1806. 8. Salome LUPP, b. January 30, 1808, and christened in Arendtsville, Adams County, PA, April 10, 1808. Probably d. before 1820. 9. Jesse LUPP, b. November 3, 1816, and christened December 1, 1816, in Arendtsville, Adams County, PA. Jacob LOOP [Anthony LUPP(5), Johann Christian(4), Henrich(3), August(2), Anthony(1)], was the fourth child of Anthony LUPP and Anna Catherina DENCKER. We know from the christening record for one of Anthony LUPP Jr.'s children that Jacob LUPP's wife's name was Anna Maria. He was born in Pennsylvania about 1771 and she was born in Pennsylvania about 1772. Jacob LOOP appears in the tax records for Menallen Township in Adams County for the years 1799, 1800, 1802, and 1806, some of the other years' records being missing. He appears in the 1800 census of Menallen Township as a male aged 26 to 45 with a wife aged 26 to 45 and two girls under ten. He may be the Jacob LOOP who is censused in 1810 in Columbiana County, Ohio. He shows up in Wayne County, Ohio, in the 1820 census. There are two Jacob LOOP's in 1830, and in 1840 Jacob LOOP, Sr., is enumerated with his wife, both between 60 and 70 years old. In 1850 the father and son are enumerated as Jacob LOOP and Jacob LOOP, Jr. The children of Jacob LOOP and his wife Maria were: + 1. Jacob LOOP, Jr., b. about 1806 in PA, m. Nancy, surname unknown. Roger Bartlett - Thanks for your letter. As you can see, I'm not going to be publishing the Loop Scoop much longer. If you send me $15, I will be glad to make copies of all the back issues that deal with your line. Regardless, I will add your name to those interested in receiving the free yearly short newsletter. 2. Mary Hammond - Thanks for your letter. The same offer applies to you that I made to Roger Bartlett (see note #1), though, of course, you needn't send me any more money. If you do not want the back issues dealing with your family (I realize someone may have already given you copies) then I will be glad to return your check. 3. Jo A. Galloway - Thanks for your letter. Philip LOOP and Ensign Henry LOOP are on two completely separate lines of the LOOP family. Are you somehow related to both lines? That would be very unusual. Tell me more about your Loop line(s). Anyway, I will be glad to furnish you copies of the back issues covering your line(s) of descent for $15. 4. Georgia Vorce - Thanks for returning your back issues. I'll be able to send them out to others who want them. It was very thoughtful of you. Thanks for your support for so many years.
